Unique Grip – an archaeological treasure trove

In connection with fire safety work at the fishing village of Grip, archaeologists from the county municipality have made discoveries that may provide a better understanding of the island’s history.

For those of us who work with the history of Grip every single day, this is nothing new — but rather a confirmation and documentation of a unique story.

Grip was the largest settlement in Nordmøre during the 13th and 14th centuries, and was thriving at a time when the rest of Norway experienced a population decline due to, among other things, the Black Death.

"A ship arrived in Bjørgvin in 1349."

From Grip, ships set sail — it is a living fishing village and a historical, ecological, architectural, and archaeological gem.

This will have significance for the unique fishing village, and we look forward to continuing sustainable tourism and sharing the history of the island out in the open sea.
